No Tricks, Just Treats: Finding Balance This Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner, and with it comes the excitement of costumes, spooky fun, and of course, candy. For many of us, indulging in a few sweet treats is part of the experience. But as we enjoy these seasonal goodies, that familiar voice may creep in: the “food noise.” You know the one: those negative thoughts tied to food, especially during holidays and special events, when indulgence seems unavoidable.

This food noise gets louder in busy, stressful times, telling us we shouldn’t have that candy, or worse, making us feel guilty after we’ve eaten it. But here’s the truth: you can still enjoy Halloween (or any holiday or special event!), eat the sweet treat, and be successful with your health goals.

What is “Food Noise”?
“Food noise” refers to the internal chatter about food choices. It is often centered around guilt or fear of indulgence. It’s that feeling that eating something “unhealthy” is a failure and that you’ve “ruined” your progress or health with your indulgence. During holidays like Halloween, food noise often gets louder because there’s more temptation and pressure to indulge.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. The key is to approach all and any food with balance and mindfulness. You can have your sweet treat and still stick to your goals, but it is also important to be honest with yourself and set some guardrails.

There’s Room for Candy in a Healthy Diet
One thing I always emphasize is that being healthy doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite treats entirely. You can absolutely enjoy Halloween candy as part of a balanced lifestyle, and there’s no need to feel guilty about it. However, it’s also important to acknowledge that there comes a point where you need to stop. Balance is key.

Here are a few strategies to help you find that balance this Halloween:

1. Set Limits on Candy Consumption
Enjoying candy is fine, but setting boundaries is important to avoid overindulgence. You could limit yourself to a certain number of pieces each day, allowing yourself to indulge mindfully without going overboard.

2. Incorporate Candy into a Balanced Meal
Instead of treating candy as a standalone snack, incorporate it into a balanced meal. Much like how we serve our kids dessert after dinner, this helps keep things in perspective and keeps your blood sugar more stable, reducing the urge to overeat.

3. Choose a Select Number of Pieces, Donate the Rest
You don’t have to keep every piece of candy. Pick your favorite ones and let yourself enjoy them, then donate the rest. Many organizations like OSI will be collecting leftover candy, and it’s a great way to reduce temptation and help others.

4. Keep the Candy You Don’t Like
Strange as it sounds, keeping candy for your family that you don’t like can actually help reduce temptation. If you know you won’t want to eat it, having it around won’t trigger cravings as easily. It’s a simple, yet effective, way to avoid eating mindlessly.

A Quick Word on Added Sugars
While indulging in candy once in a while won’t derail your progress, it’s important to be mindful of added sugars in your diet over the long term. The occasional sweet treat is perfectly fine, but consuming too much added sugar on a regular basis can have negative impacts on your health, from increasing the risk of weight gain to negatively affecting heart health. Being aware of how much sugar you’re consuming overall is key to finding that balance and making room for the occasional indulgence without compromising your health.

Quiet the Food Noise and Enjoy Halloween
This Halloween, let’s ditch the guilt. Enjoy a few pieces of candy, be mindful of your limits, and allow yourself to savor the season without stress. By balancing indulgence with mindfulness, you can quiet that food noise and navigate the Halloween (and the other upcoming holidays) in a way that supports both your health and your happiness.
