Resume Where You Are

In life, a little rain does fall. It happens. As it turns out, it also happens that sometimes we get sick and sometimes we get injured, even when we are doing “everything right.” Sometimes, unfortunate things just happen. And it sucks.

If you’ve been around OSi very long, you know that we champion the phrase, “Start where you are. Do what you can. Use what you have.” Wherever you are starting from is a good place to improve your life. After an injury, it is tempting to press pause on our activities. After all, why would we keep training if we are injured?

Because we lose what we don’t use and doing something is almost always better than doing nothing.

Exercising correctly does not make you immune to getting injured. It may stack the odds in your favor, but life still has a way of happening. If you do get injured, that is not the time to unplug from your health and fitness journey. If anything, it may be the time to enhance your health and fitness.

We can learn from our injuries. Not necessarily learn from them in the sense that, “I shouldn’t do that again,” but learn from them in the sense that we can discover new ways to move and provide our bodies with the resources they need to heal faster and better.

Movement heals and movement hastens healing. It helps retain the whole body’s health.

Not moving, unplugging, abstaining from moving can actually weaken the body in that the lack of engagement hastens atrophy and weakness. It can even increase the intensity of pain signals.

If we don’t move, we lose what we have and what we have becomes what we had.

But if we move, if we stay engaged and do what we can, move where we can often with curiosity, we can keep what we have and even build upon it.

When we move often, when we engage in a health and fitness routine often, we are asking our brain to build our bodies up. We are asking it to allow us to move freely with strength and vigor.

All of this to say, don’t let injury sideline you. Stay on course. Keep using your body in the new ways that it will now allow you to. Don’t fret about what you can’t do, discover what you can do. Let your body know you love it and you want to keep it. If you just don’t know what to do, let us know and we will help you come up with a movement strategy.

Our trainers are here to help you. And we want to.

Life at OSi is not always about pressing reset. Sometimes it is about pressing on.

Keep moving. It keeps you.
