Most people think January is the time for a fresh start… we’re so used to seeing all of those big pushes for gym memberships, diets and New Years Resolutions.
But if you’re a parent, you know the truth: fall is when the real new year begins.
Summer is amazing (and chaotic). Vacations, pool days, late nights, cookouts — all fun, but not exactly routine. And honestly? That’s part of what makes summer special. But by the end, it can also leave us feeling drained and scattered. IYKYK, right!?
This past week, I’ve noticed a big shift in my own family life. With both of my kids finally back in school, sports schedules set, and daily routines falling into place, things aren’t necessarily easier, but they’re clearer. Everyone knows their roles, their responsibilities, and the plan. And with that structure, it finally feels like I can catch my breath and reset myself too.
Why Fall Feels Like a Fresh Start
When August and September roll around, everything changes. Calendars get filled, alarms get set, and suddenly we’re back to a rhythm. And while that might sound like more work, the truth is, having structure gives us freedom. It helps us carve out the time to take care of ourselves, too.
The Parent Trap
The danger is that parents often put themselves last when school kicks off. Workouts get skipped. Meals are rushed. Sleep gets sacrificed. But those are the exact things that give us the energy and strength to keep up with everything else.
We stress on making sure the kids get all of these things to help make sure they are good to go for school, sports and life, but then we neglect our own needs or flounder as we half heartedly attempt with no real plan or goal.
