Dry Needling Explained: How It Works and Who It Helps

Is Dry Needling Right for You? Here’s What to Know

If you’ve heard the term “dry needling” but aren’t quite sure what it means—or if it’s something you should try—you’re not alone. At Original Strength Institute, we get questions about it all the time, which is why we sat down with our on-site physical therapist, Dr. Kurt Brooks, to clear things up.

Whether you’re dealing with stubborn pain, feeling tight in all the wrong places, or trying to finally wake up those sleepy glutes, dry needling might just be the game-changer your body has been asking for.

What Exactly Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling (also called trigger point dry needling) is a technique that uses a very thin, monofilament needle—yes, the same kind used in acupuncture—to penetrate the skin and target “trigger points” or knots in the muscle. These knots are often the source of pain, tightness, or restricted movement.

Think of it as hitting the reset button for your muscles.

So… Is It the Same as Acupuncture?

Not quite.

While both practices use similar tools, they’re based on very different approaches. Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on rebalancing the flow of energy (chi) along the body’s meridians.

Dry needling, on the other hand, is a modern, evidence-based technique focused on relieving muscular dysfunction. The needle is placed directly into a problem area—like that tight spot between your shoulder blades or the glute that refuses to fire—to help reduce pain, release tension, and restore proper movement.

What Does It Feel Like?

Most people are surprised by how little they feel when the needle is inserted. Some describe a dull ache or a quick muscle twitch, which is a good sign that the needle has hit the right spot. You might feel sore afterward, kind of like post-leg day at the gym—but without the squats.

What Can Dry Needling Help With?

Dry needling is often used to treat:

  • Muscle pain and tightness

  • Reduced range of motion

  • Trigger points (aka muscle knots)

  • Muscle imbalances or inhibited muscles

  • Chronic or nagging injuries

  • That one spot that just. won’t. loosen up.

It’s especially helpful for anyone dealing with discomfort from workouts, posture, repetitive movements—or just life in general.

Bonus: We often combine dry needling with electrical stimulation for even more muscle activation and recovery support.
