Meet Jayne – Her ‘I CAN’T’ excuse became ‘I CAN’

Our Spotlight Member this week is 63-year-young and strong, Jayne Koch!!

We love Jayne and we are so glad she is at OS Institute with us!  She is one of those people that everyone wants to partner up with and is an awesome encourager.  We always know that when Jayne is in class, the class will most certainly be going in an extra positive direction.  Actually, Jayne even won our OSi Member of the Year Award last year!

Jayne has been with us since 2014 and she has grown to be one strong and able lady that everyone looks up to!!  Read about her journey and her why.

How did you hear about/what made you decide to try OSi?

Before we moved to Fuquay in 2014 I researched online for places to workout. I was looking for a small group setting, (no large big box gym) and functional, fun, training by knowledgeable instructors. I loved what I read and decided before moving here that this would be my workout place.

What are your favorite things to do outside of the gym? What do you do for a living?

I am retired and love my family, to travel, run, hike, yoga and explore new places and meet new people.

When you hear “OSi” what is the first thing that comes to mind?

This is where I belong. The training was exactly what I was looking for, but the idea of resets was new to me. I came to OSI with a shoulder injury (a nasty frozen shoulder) and figured nothing else has worked so far so I would give it a try.  Resets are so simple, but they work.  (Check out Jayne talking about OSi on WRAL here.)

What changes have you seen in yourself since starting training with OS Institute?
My shoulder has almost complete range of motion and I am pain free. I am stronger and more confident in movements that I previously avoided because either I couldn’t do them or I was afraid. Balancing has gotten easier, I am using heavier kettlebells, lifting heavier and willing to try just about anything new.
What has motivated you to keep coming to class even when you don’t necessarily feel like it?

I would say I just about always look forward to coming. But the few times I am “not feeling it” I just remind myself what great friends and workout partners I have to look forward to. And of course I know once I get started I will feel fantastic afterwards.

I feel so honored and blessed to be working out at OSI with Tim & Dani. They travel all over the world sharing their knowledge of Original Strength and are very respected in the fitness world. Best part is we get to benefit daily from their knowledge & they inspire us to be the best version of ourselves.  How lucky are we to be a part of this!!  OSI has become family.

What is your proudest achievement/next big goal at OSi?

One of my proudest achievement has been getting up & over the big box.

At first I was petrified to even try. Then I tried but didn’t have the upper body strength to
get over or flexibility. As I got stronger, my mind did also, and my ‘I can’t’ excuse became ‘I can’.

Another proud moment was signing up for the 6 week Grind It Out Semi Private Strength Program this past Winter.  It taught me that I am stronger than I thought I was and to approach each session with I can do this. I am deadlifting and squatting more than my bodyweight and I am still open to trying to go heavier.

Now I am working towards getting my pull ups and improving my balance.

What is something you would say to your first week of OSi self to encourage/help them?

Keep an open mind to try new things. Good, better, best… an option for any one & any movement.
